Hear from our Head of Growth, Colin Price, about his team, what attracted him to Kriya, and what he’s looking forward to most in 2024.
Tell us about your role
I’m responsible for our go-to-market initiatives, helping us find new customers and growing the ones we already work with.
What’s Growth?
Growth is an evolution of your more traditional Marketing function. Branding and finding new business opportunities are still a big part of what we do, but ultimately, we care about revenue and the whole customer funnel, from acquisition through to retention.
It’s a very collaborative function, and we work closely with both Product and Commercial teams. Our product is a real asset, so showcasing it and developing ways to make it sell itself and generate new business is an area I’m very passionate about. Making sure we’re all dialled in on understanding our ideal customer profile and having overlapping goals ensures we work together cohesively.
What led you to pursue this career path, and what enticed you to join Kriya?
I’ve been working in the tech industry for a bit longer than I’d like to admit! I actually started off in Sales, but pivoted into Marketing after a few years. I’m a naturally creative and analytical person and I wanted to put those traits to better use.
I find a sales background is a great asset for a marketer though - the commercial mind-set and a need to understand your customers’ problems is key.
Having worked for some great companies in the SaaS and fintech space, I’ve done everything from field marketing to partnerships to product-led growth. The challenge to build on this experience and set up the Growth function at Kriya was too much of an opportunity to resist!
Tell us about your team
We’re a pretty lean team right now but I like to think we punch above our weight! Alongside myself there’s our Growth Operations specialist and a brigade of freelancers that we work with across brand design, search, web, content, PR and more.
As a new function, we have exciting plans to grow this year. With major wins like Halfords under our belt, Kriya has an amazing opportunity in the Enterprise market, so building out the team to deliver on this is a big priority. Beyond that, there’s plenty of scope to develop on the foundations of our product marketing and content. In a way, we’re just getting started!
What do you enjoy the most about working at Kriya?
One of our company values is #MakeItHappen and it really resonates with me. Everyone here is given a lot of ownership and empowered to do great work. You get to collaborate with lots of very smart people, be pragmatic and turn ideas into reality pretty quickly.
I also like the fact our work model is hybrid - it’s truly the best of both worlds. There’s great energy and time to connect when I’m in the office (the free lunches on Tuesdays and Thursdays are a nice touch too!). But I can also get my head down working from home, fit in some exercise, and spend more quality time with my family.
At Kriya we’re all about continual learning, how do you embrace this?
For starters, I’m a total geek for podcasts! I listen to too many to list, but Lenny’s Podcast and Exit Five are regulars for me. I find there’s so much good content in newsletters and LinkedIn nowadays too - I'm regularly checking in on what thought-leaders like Kyle Poyar, April Dunford and Chris Walker have to say.
At work, I think the best ways to learn are speaking with customers, experimenting and listening to feedback. I always encourage my team to do all three.
Firstly, it never ceases to amaze me how directly hearing what your target audience has to say about their market can radically change your perspective and inform your work. Regular customer interviews and jumping on discovery calls is a must.
Secondly I’m a big advocate for running experiments versus doing random acts of marketing! Having a clear rationale and being really measured and intentional about testing it is such an important part of learning. And if it fails, finding out what doesn’t work is a very useful step along the way to establishing what does.
Lastly, feedback is a gift. Seek it out wherever you can, and not just in a self-affirming way. Be humble and take onboard the constructive stuff that really helps you develop and grow.
